USA : Dunkin' Donuts to test premium tea in Chicago

(Bloomberg) — Dunkin' Donuts, known for gooey breakfast treats and no-frills coffee, is taking a stab at a more refined business: premium tea.

Starting in October, the chain will test five new varieties of tea in hundreds of Chicago locations, said Chris Fuqua, vice president of marketing. The blends include black, hibiscus, chamomile, mint and one called “harmony leaf.”

“The tea market is one that's evolving relatively quickly,” Fuqua said. “It's one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world.”

Dunkin' Brands Group Inc., the doughnut chain's parent company, is trying to attract higher-end consumers and compete better with Starbucks Corp., which sells Teavana brand tea. Starbucks has said the tea category is worth $100 billion globally and is its fastest-growing product segment.

Currently, Dunkin' sells regular, decaf and green tea. The premium teas, sold in triangle-shaped sachets, may eventually replace this line, Fuqua said.

USA : Dunkin’ Donuts vs Starbucks

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Both began as regional brands, with Dunkin’ Donuts starting in 1950 in the Northeast and Starbucks launching in 1971 in the Northwest, and both built a devoted following among locals before expanding their empires across the United States and all around the globe. Japan was the first international stop for both--Dunkin’ Donuts opened its Tokyo outpost in 1970 and Starbucks followed in 1996.

Dunkin’ Donuts now has nearly 11,000 restaurants in 33 countries (about 7,000 in the U.S.). Starbucks has 23,000 retail stores in 64 countries (13,000 of them in the U.S.; as of 6/2014). Between them, the two companies own around 60% of the country's coffee market--with Starbucks controlling an estimated 36% and DD roughly 24%.

Dunkin’ Donuts reports that it sells 1.8 billion cups of coffee annually. Starbucks chooses not to share how many cups of coffee it sells a year. Though not directly comparable, this figure is of note: according to a press release the brand issued on its recycling efforts, Starbucks beverages account for approximately 4 billion cups globally each year.

Dunkin Donuts i Taco Bell

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr

Domino’s Pizza

  • Headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI
  • 5,016 USA stores (10/14).
  • The new store incorporates a pizza theater store design, comprising a lobby, a clear view of the food preparing process, a lobby screen which electronically keeps track of carryout orders and a chalkboard where customers can leave a feedback.
