USA : Starbucks Reserve Roastery on Michigan Avenue in Chicago in 2019

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr

  • The four-story location, slated to open in 2019 in the space occupied by Crate & Barrel,
  • The 43,000-square-foot Reserve Roastery will be the chain's largest.
  • Visitors will be able to interact with master roasters and the coffee-making process.
  • In addition to offering multiple brewing methods and special Reserve beverages, the new Starbucks concept will also include food from Princi.
  • The location will be the third Roastery in the U.S. and the sixth globally. The Seattle location opened in 2014, and a New York City Roastery will open in 2018. Shanghai, Milan and Tokyo locations are slated for openings in the coming year.

The deal marks the end of an era for a local retailer, Northbrook-based Crate & Barrel, which has had a store in the Michigan Avenue building for 27 years.

Crate & Barrel spokeswoman Jill Assad said the store will remain open through the holiday season, likely closing by early 2018. Its other store in the city, on North Avenue in the Clybourn Corridor, will remain open, she said.

USA: Starbucks planning a flagship store in Chicago

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Starbucks plans to open an upscale store focused on its Reserve coffees in the Fulton Market district, the chain's first such shop in Chicago.

Starbucks is planning a flagship store in this building at 1000 W. Randolph St.

The company has leased about 4,000 square feet on the ground floor of a two-story building at 1000 W. Randolph St. for a flagship that will focus on Starbucks' rare small-batch coffee beans, according to people familiar with the deal.

Starbucks began rolling out the new store concept in December 2014, with a 15,000-square-foot Starbucks Reserve Roastery & Tasting Room in its hometown, Seattle.

At the time, Starbucks said it planned to open at least 100 such stores, with Chicago among the initial five U.S. cities it was targeting, but did not name potential locations in those cities.

Earlier this month, Starbucks confirmed plans for its largest store in the world in Manhattan: a 20,000-square-foot roastery where visitors will be able to taste coffees and learn about coffee brewing and bean origins.

The new Chicago store will be much larger than a typical Starbucks but is one-fifth the size of the New York behemoth that will open in 2018. It's not yet clear what elements the new Chicago store will share with the mega-sized roasting facilities.

The 23,000-square-foot building was formerly home to B.A. Florist & Nursery. Starbucks has a traditional store across Morgan Street, at 946 W. Randolph.

Fulton Market—on the northwest edge of the West Loop and west of the Kennedy Expressway—was once a center for meatpackers and food distributors but has recently drawn new uses including creative offices, retail and hotels.

Starbucks: Limited-Edition Cherry Blossom Frappuccino

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
  • Although the drink is called Cherry Blossom, Starbucks said its ingredients are strawberries and cream, white chocolate sauce, matcha drizzle and whipped cream.
  • It is available Tuesday 3/15 until Sunday 3/20.
Starbucks is offering a new Cherry Blossom Frappuccino® blended beverage, inspired by the Japanese sakura tradition. The Starbucks beverage is a blend of sweet strawberries and cream with white chocolate sauce and matcha drizzle, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of matcha.

Cherry Blossom Frappuccino® will be available in participating U.S. stores for a limited time beginning today (March 15) through the first day of spring on Sunday, March 20.

In Japan, cherry blossoms are the national flower and a symbol of renewal and simplicity. Families, friends and colleagues gather under sakura trees and enjoy picnics and parties under the delicate pink blooms, a tradition that dates back at least a thousand years. It is also time for new beginnings, marking both the coming of spring and the start of a new school year. Sakura festivals around the world honor the return of the cherry blossoms and celebrate Japanese culture.

Starbucks Changes Rewards Program

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Starbucks is changing the terms of its rewards program so that people who spend around $5 or less per visit won't get as many freebies.

The Seattle-based coffee chain says its loyalty program will award stars based on the dollars spent starting in April. Currently, people earn a star for each transaction, regardless of how much they spend, and get a free food or drink item of their choice after earning 12 stars.

People will now have to earn 125 stars for a free item, with each dollar spent being worth two stars — meaning they have to spend $62.50 to get their free item. That means people who stick with options like plain coffee are losing out.

Each Star expires 6 months after you earn it.
For instance, someone who regularly pays $2 for a regular drip coffee would currently earn a free item after spending around $24 over 12 visits. Under the new system, they would have to visit more than 31 times to earn the perk.

Someone who gets a large latte for $4.45 currently spends around $53.40 over a dozen visits before getting a free item. So that person would also need to visit a couple of extra times for the freebie with the new system.

The change comes as Starbucks has been pushing to get more people signed up for its My Starbucks Rewards program. Loyalty members spend three times as much as non-members, and help push up profit, according to the company.

Last month, Starbucks said it had 11.1 million loyalty program members in the U.S., up 23 percent from the previous year.

Starbucks: aged coffee

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
  • Aged Sumatra coffee at Starbucks Reserve:  $17.50 for 8.8 oz (0.25 kg)

  • Starbucks ages coffee at a warehouse in Singapore, then uses the beans in certain single-origin coffees and signature blends, such as their Christmas Blend and Anniversary Blend.
  • When coffee first came to Europe in the 1500s, it was aged coffee. At that time, Europe's coffee supply came from the port of Mocha in what is now Yemen. Importing coffee to Europe required a long voyage by sea around the southern tip of Africa. This still held true when coffee production spread to Indonesia and India.

Starbucks $200 gift card

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Starbucks has unveiled the $200 card “for Starbucks fans looking for a premium gift,” the chain recently announced. Starbucks goes on to note that the item is a “beautifully crafted, fully-functional gift card” made with sterling silver and “engraved with the Starbucks logo.”

Oh, and like other gift cards, it comes loaded, but in this case only with $50. In other words, the other $150 is the price for the physical card itself.

So far, the card appears to be a hit: The chain notes that the card sold out online and only “limited quantities” are available at select Starbucks stores nationwide.

But not all consumers seem so excited. As one announced on Twitter: “Paying $200 for $50 gift card redeemable for high profit-margin coffee is the most American idiocy there is.”

In 2013, Starbucks sold a $450 all-metal rose gold hue card. It came with a preloaded $400 to use at Starbucks, plus "automatic" My Starbucks Rewards™ gold-level status and all the associated perks.

USA : Dunkin’ Donuts vs Starbucks

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Both began as regional brands, with Dunkin’ Donuts starting in 1950 in the Northeast and Starbucks launching in 1971 in the Northwest, and both built a devoted following among locals before expanding their empires across the United States and all around the globe. Japan was the first international stop for both--Dunkin’ Donuts opened its Tokyo outpost in 1970 and Starbucks followed in 1996.

Dunkin’ Donuts now has nearly 11,000 restaurants in 33 countries (about 7,000 in the U.S.). Starbucks has 23,000 retail stores in 64 countries (13,000 of them in the U.S.; as of 6/2014). Between them, the two companies own around 60% of the country's coffee market--with Starbucks controlling an estimated 36% and DD roughly 24%.

Dunkin’ Donuts reports that it sells 1.8 billion cups of coffee annually. Starbucks chooses not to share how many cups of coffee it sells a year. Though not directly comparable, this figure is of note: according to a press release the brand issued on its recycling efforts, Starbucks beverages account for approximately 4 billion cups globally each year.

USA : Starbucks tests Frappuccino Mini

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Starbucks has begun to test what it's calling the Frappuccino Mini, a 10-ounce Frappuccino that's a tad lower in price and calories than the conventional 12-ounce version. The test, which is taking place in Denver and Houston, will determine if the mini version expands to other markets, says Lisa Passe, a Starbucks spokeswoman.

"It's about customers looking for choices," says Passe. "We're learning and listening to what customers are saying." The 10-ounce version costs about 30-cents less than the conventional 12-ounce beverage.

The move -- first reported by the blog StarbucksMelody -- comes as smaller desserts and mini-indulgences continue to be white hot at restaurants nationally. It's hard to find a casual dining chain that hasn't rolled out some sort of mini-desert lineup. The small servings appeal to Millennials, to customers who are concerned about calories and to parents who feel better about purchasing smaller sizes for kids.

At roughly $2 billion in annual sales, the Frappuccino -- a blend of of coffee, milk and ice that now has many flavors and forms -- remains one of the coffee giant's most profitable offerings.

The new beverage is really a "kids-sized" Frappuccino, says Melody Overton, creator of the StarbucksMelody blog, "but if they market it as kids-sized, it might have less appeal for adults." At the same time, she notes, Starbucks also has been prodded by customers to roll out a "Trenta" (32-ounce) Frappuccino.

That's not going to happen, says Passe. "That (size is) only for iced tea and Refreshers," she says.

A few years ago, when the recession slowed Frappuccino sales, Starbucks added customizable options to boost its sales -- including non-fat milk and sugar-free toppings. The company says there are more than 36,000 potential combinations of Frappuccinos worldwide.

With Frappuccinos, it seems to always be about extremes. Last spring, Starbucks Japan rolled out the Chunky Cookie Frappuccino -- blended with an entire chocolate chunk cookie inside.

No plans for that one in the U.S. says Passe.

Switzerland: Starbucks on a train

Share this Post Email This Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share on Google Plus Share on Tumblr
Starbucks, with the help of Swiss train company SBB, has converted a double-decker car running from Geneva Airport to St. Gallen in Switzerland into a fully functional Starbucks store, complete with wood tables, leather chairs, and, in another first for the company, waitstaff.

The bottom floor was carpeted to absorb noise in the space. Surfaces have clocklike maple inlays to acknowledge Switzerland’s love affair with timepieces. A waiter takes and delivers an order upstairs so that people wouldn’t need to claim their seat, run downstairs to the line, and run back up—which Starbucks designers witnessed happening in their own field research. (A waiter can also serve the ground floor for good measure.) And in a very cool touch, tables are treated to have a textured surface, plus they wobble the slightest bit as a train comes into the station, to prevent spilling your coffee.
